A Message From Our New President

Dear Friends,

As we kick-off a new fiscal year, let me begin by thanking our outgoing 2007-2008 Board President, Edith Grady for her time and dedication to the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley throughout the year. During her tenure, in partnership with Michelle Gavigan, YWCA Staff and the Board of Directors, we have continued to provide programs that push forward the Mission of the YWCA.

We empowered girls with our Just for Girls after school program, empowered women with The Women of Excellence Speaker Series. We have worked toward eliminating racism with an Action Forum "RACE: Words Matter! Action Follows!" produced and hosted by the Racial Justice Committee and was attended by 50 community leaders. Additionally, we launched a YWCA blog titled "What's the Difference" to address race, ethnic and gender discrimination.

A big thank you to our volunteers, donors and past Presidents and Board Members for their continued support and dedication to the YWCA throughout the years. Whether you are a corporate supporter, government funder, individual contributor or volunteer, we greatly appreciate your financial support and time.

Fiscal year 2009 promises to be another exciting year! We have already kicked off the year with our Summer Girls' Empowerment Camp and have begun planning for our fall events. Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the fall. Save the date for the YWCA Women for Racial Justice Breakfast – Embracing our Diversity on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 7:30 am to 9:30 am at the Pasadena Hilton.

Warmest Regards,

Carmen Vargas
YWCA Board President

Girls' Empowerment Camp:
The YWCA's Girl's Empowerment Day Camp is in full swing!

We have just finished the third week of our Girl's Empowerment Camp. These weeks have been packed with swimming, empowering lessons & discussions, team-building games, college campus tours and growing friendships.

Swimming at Pasadena High School

Each week the lessons and discussion focus on a different theme. The themes for the first three weeks were: Life Skills, Self-Defense & Wellness, and Healthy Relationships respectively. Below is a picture of the girls learning proper table etiquette during our week of learning life skills.

We also tour a different college campus each week. We have visited UCLA, USC and Cal State L.A. We are looking forward to what the last two weeks have in store as these young girls begin growing into empowered women.
