Racial Justice Forum
A month after the YWCA provided a community wide forum on race and its interplay with violence, we report on current activities for follow-up with forum participants

During October's YWCA Week Without Violence, our Racial Justice Committee held a forum of community leaders.  Approximately 50 community leaders participated in discussions facilitated by Dr. Gerda Govine on the topic "Words Matter . . . Actions Follow."  The purpose: to determine personal steps that each could take to reduce violence in Pasadena / Altadena, specifically the Northwest Community.

A report has been sent to each forum participant and the YWCA will be following up in intervals throughout the year to reflect and communicate collective successes while also helping to facilitate collaborations for future Racial Justice endeavors.   We greatly appreicate the time Dr. Govine has contributed to this project.

If you would like to become more involved in promoting racial justice, here are two suggestions.

  • Check out the YWCA's National website where you can view ABC's Good Morning America broadcast of a six-women panel discussion, "Women Discuss Hidden Prejudices."
  • Attend our Racial Justice Committee.  This committee meets once a month, our next meeting is in January.  For more information you may contact Denise Jones , Committee Chair  or Ashely Phillips at 626-296-8433, ext. 12.

  Affordable Housing in Pasadena

As an organization that champions the issues of racial justice and women's empowerment, the YWCA sees the issue of affordable housing to have great relevance.  No two groups of people are more disproportionatley affected by the lack of affordable hosuing in our City than low-income minority families and single parent, female headed households.  We urge you to be a part of the conversation in our City.

Your Charitable Dollars At Work

When the United Way chose to fund organizations reaching a far larger population than the small community organizations it has historically supported, the YWCA Pasadena- Foothill Valley lost nearly $50,000 in annual financial support. Dollars from community members have always been essential; this year they are more important than ever. You can help make up this deficit by clicking on the link below and making a gift to the YWCA that will keep Just for Girls, Week Without Violence, and our Racial Justice Initiatives strong throughout 2008.

Just For Girls (JFG) News:
JFG participants and their mothers enjoyed spending time together at our annual Mother Daughter Night

JFG participants and their mothers eat and work on craft projects together at Mother & Daughter Night held on November 13th, 2007

Strengthening the Mother Daughter Bond:
October and November are months to promote the theme of violence prevention in our JFG Curriculum.  Violence prevention takes many different forms from education, to providing resources, to teaching self-defense and even strengthening family relationships. Youth that have a strong network of familial and relational support are less likely to put themselves into negative situations and make decisions that could lead to their physical harm. Having the freedom and confidence to talk with an adult, especially a parent, mitigates the negative and harmful influences on our youth.

During our weekly JFG sessions, the girls were asked to identify and discuss different types of mother-daughter relationships, the challenges and frustrations in their relationships with their moms and also ways they can better communicate and connect with them. One group session asked the girls to write a letter to their moms explaining something that they would normally have trouble saying face-to-face. The girls then had to decide whether or not to give the letters to their moms; the overall idea was to open the door to communication.

Mother & Daughter Night
This November we hosted 42 girls and their mothers for a night where they can enjoy a meal together and a few hours without interruption.

Each mother/guardian and daughter who participated in Mother Daughter Night received a frame that they decorated, a Polaroid picture of themselves, dinner, and dessert. To conclude the night, the mothers/guardians and daughters were provided with a presentation by Peace Over Violence on Self-Defense.

We Are Recruiting!

Just for Girls is a YWCA mentoring program designed to address issues affecting the lives of young women.  We provide a positive safe environment to talk about issues and get the facts.  We continuously focus on building self esteem and confidence. Throughout the year we will cover how to establish healthy relationships, dealing with bullying, girls' health, thinking ahead to college and careers, and completing a community service project.

If you know of a girl attending Willard Elementary, Wilson and Eliot middle schools or Blair middle and high school who would benefit from our program please contact Jasmine Guerrero. We also offer a Just for Girls program at our facility on Wednesdays from 4-6 pm for young women ages 12-16.

For a study linking after school programs to reduction in juvenile arrests, see this article:   "After-school Programs Target Juvenile Crime" from the National YWCA website.
