The YWCA is a Global Movement.  What we do at the moment is on such a local scale, and most certainly valuable, but recognizing what Empowering Women means to so many and to see the issues that are important to women worldwide is inspiring and stimulating to say the least.  We urge you to make time to check out the website for the world ywca.

World YWCA stated purpose:
To develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the world to achieve justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and a sustainable environment for all people.

Issues Affecting Women
Join us Wednesday, March 2, from 6 to 7pm
at the YWCA.
The YWCA’s newly formed Women’s Issues Committee is in a fact-finding stage to hear from different organizations about issues affecting women in our community. We invite you to join us as we hear from Planned Parenthood Pasadena San Gabriel Valley.

Sara Howard, VP of Public Affairs and Communications will talk about the women, teens and men served and educated by Planned Parenthood, including the services that are delivered, the needs of the client populations, the potential impact of healthcare reform, and current challenges to the reproductive rights of all women and men in light of recent Congressional action.

Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to or 626-296-8433
One City, One Story
 Mudbound Book Discussion
On behalf of the Racial Justice Committee, I’d like to extend an invitation to each of you to join in our “One City, One Story” book discussion. The concept of “One City, One Story” was adopted by the City of Pasadena as a community book read and discussion.

The RJC is joining the City of Pasadena in hosting a book discussion of the book, Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan. The discussion will take place on March 23, 2011 at the YWCA office. Jan Sanders, Pasadena Public Library will facilitate the discussion.

We encourage you to participate in this activity sponsored by the Racial Justice Committee. It is an opportunity to partner with the RJC, join in a citywide effort and support “One City, One Story” and enjoy a good book. Again the discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 from 5:00pm until 6:30pm.  We hope see you at the event!
Please RSVP to Ashley Phillips at 626-296-8433 or

Empower the Women's Vote
The YWCA and the 50:50 Coalition are partnering to host a Get-Out-The-Vote rally and empower the women's vote.

This Saturday, March 5
4:00 - 5:30 pm
YWCA (1200 N. Fair Oaks Ave., #9)

This is the last weekend before the March 8 election, a critical time for boosting turnout and pushing candidates over the top to victory. You will hear from candidates running for Pasadena City Council and PUSD school board, have a chance to sign up to work on their GOTV campaigns (phoning, walking, reminding), and enjoy the company of other women who are getting involved. We look forward to seeing you -- and bring a friend!

About the 50:50 Coalition
Initiated in 2005 in the wake of local elections that left no women on the Pasadena School Board and only one woman on the Pasadena City Council, the 50:50 Coalition is dedicated to finding and helping to elect highly qualified women to serve on local elected bodies and to identifying highly qualified women to serve on commissions. They are an informal coalition of women and women’s organizations working to empower the women’s vote.

Learn more about the 50:50 Coalition or sign up to be on their coalition list by contacting Susan Kane or Jeanette Mann
