~ What Every Woman Should Know About a Man’s Health ~

Women often play a key role in decision making for their family’s health. In many cases, the life of a man has been saved because a woman urged him – a brother, father, partner - to get his health checked.

Today prostate cancer is the leading form of cancer found in all men. Statistics show 1 out of 6 Caucasian men will develop it in their lifetime. For African-American men, research indicates that they have the highest rate of prostate cancer, affecting 1 out of 4 males, while Hispanic men are the most likely group to die from it.

If detected early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. So it’s important that a woman knows something about a man’s immune system. Prostate cancer not only affects men, it also has a devastating effect on entire families, especially wives and partners.

"Just for Girls" Spotlight
Valeria Sosa, JFG participant at Muir, wins Gates Millennium scholarship

The Gates Millennium scholarship is selective and prestigious and pays for both college and graduate school, leaving a student with an open ability to pursue whatever occupation she pleases.

One of the John Muir students, Valeria Sosa has now been selected as a winner, according to Hilda Ramirez of the Pasadena Unified School District.

Sosa maintains an estimated 3.94 GPA while taking part in the school's Engineering Academy, varisty soccer team for four years and Puente Club.

Valeria is also a part of many community groups.  Not only is she been an active member in our Just for Girls group over the past two years, she is also a part of Neighbors Empowering Youth. She is poised to be her graduating class's valedictorian.

Issues Affecting Women
Meeting Wednesday, May 4, from 6 to 7pm at the YWCA

The YWCA’s Women’s Empowerment Committee is continuing their fact-finding stage to hear from different organizations about issues affecting women in our community. Our next conversation will be with Oasis USA.

Oasis USA works with local communities to raise awareness about the current form of slavery in human trafficking.  Not just an issue for countries overseas, the US estimates up to 17,500 people are trafficked into America for forced labor or sex work every year.  The issue is in our backyard.

We hope that you will join us and lend your voice to the conversation.  We want to hear from you and partner with you as we strive to postiviely affect the women of our community and better understand their needs.

Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Ashley Phillips at or

Last Month, we heard from Lt. Phlunte Riddle from the Pasadena Police Department.
