The YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley would like to give special thanks to The Gas Company of Pasadena for a recent grant awarded for our Just for Girls program! Support from The Gas Company makes it possible for the YWCA to continue to provide services for girls at no cost.

The YWCA's 9th Annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast is just around the corner!

If you have not yet registered for this inspirational event, be sure to register TODAY! Space is now limited as! Join the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley in honoring Toby Osos as this year's Racial Justice Award Recipient, for her lifetime commitment to Racial Justice. In addition, don't miss out on hearing this year's Keynote Speaker, Lecia Brooks of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

 

Join the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley along with local community partners in the 2011 Week Without Violence, which will take place October 17-21!

Monday, October 17: YWCA Women for Racial Justice Breakfast at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel, 168 South Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, from 7:30-9:30AM. This inspirational breakfast will kick off the Week Without Violence by celebrating community awareness and advocacy in the area of racial and social justice. Tuesday, October 18: Campaign Against Violence Rally at Washington Middle School, 1505 North Marengo Avenue, Pasadena--All day event! The YWCA, along with its partners, will invade Washington Middle School campus to put an anti-bullying and violence rally with its entire student body. Peace Over Violence presents a course on Self Defense at the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley, 1200 North Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, from 4:00-5:30PM. Youth ages 8-17 will enjoy an interactive workshop on self defense and safety. Contact Denise for more information at

Wednesday, October 19: Yoga at the Pasadena Asia Museum, 46 North Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, from 12:30-1:30PM. Join instructor Jill Zepezauer for a lunch-hour Yoga session. Cyber Bullying Prevention Workshop at the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley, 1200 North Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, from 3:30-5:30PM. Youth ages 11-17 will explore computer safety and cyber bullying prevention tactics. Contact Janee for more information at 626.296.8433

Thursday, October 20: Acquaintances/Date Rape presented by Planned Parenthood at Muir High School, 1905 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena, from 12:50-1:19PM. Guns Suck! presented by Women Against Gun Violence at Blair Middle School, 1201 South Marengo Avenue, Pasadena, from 3:15-4:15PM. Friday, October 21: Lights On! at the Pasadena Unified School District, 351 North Hudson, Pasadena, from 3:00-6:00PM in the North parking lot. Join 1 million Americans and 7,500+ communities nationwide in celebrating the afterschool programs that keep our kids safe, inspire them to learn, and helping working families. YWCA USA Partners with HERVotes!

Our national organization has joined forces with HERvotes, a coalition of leading women's organizations, focused on mobilizing women voters in 2012 around preserving women's Health and Economic rights (HERrights).

Paramount to the YWCA's role in this partnership is the YWCA's commitment to providing access throughout the nation regarding voter education.

"With our presence in communities all around the country, the YWCA will be 'action central' for educating and mobilizing voters around issues that matter to women and families," says Gloria Lau, CEO of the YWCA USA. Dr. Lucy Jones has been the seismologist with the US Geographical Survey and a Visiting Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of CalTech since 1983. Jones assisted in developing a new program to integrate hazards science in urban areas with economic analysis and emergency response to increase community resiliency to natural disasters.

Dr. Jones has authored over 90 papers on research seismology with primary interest in the physics of earthquakes, foreshocks and earthquake hazard assessment, especially in Southern California. She serves on the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council & was Commissioner of the California Seismic Safety Commission from 2002- 2009.
