YWCA Bucks County's Holiday Hearts Program is Granting Holiday Wishes

For over 10 years, YWCA Bucks County has been providing necessities and small gifts to children through their Holiday Hearts program. Children and teens enrolled in YWCA programs including the weekly Homework Zone, Early Academic Intervention Program, Kids Korner, Saturday Camp and YW Teen Group complete wish lists with details about their needs and wants for the holiday season. Their wish lists include diverse items such as chapter books, winter boots, warm coats, art kits, Legos, Easy Bake Ovens and other popular toys. Children also have the opportunity to list their hobbies, interests, and favorite colors. Once the wish lists are collected, the Resource Development Department matches children with donors, shoppers who fulfill the wish lists, and coordinates the gift distribution at holiday parties for each program location. Companies such as GE Water and Process Technologies, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Jones Apparel Group, Vertis Communications and the Agency Inside Harte-Hanks have sponsored this program, helping to make the holidays brighter for YW kids.
Serving over 300 children and teens each year, the Holiday Hearts program provides a critical and valued service. In these trying economic times, Holiday Hearts has become even more vital to YW families. Krishna, a participant in Homework Zone, described that she is “thankful for all the gifts because it helps families that can’t afford presents.” Parents are especially grateful for the kindness of Holiday Hearts donors. Nancy, a parent whose daughter attends Homework Zone, observed “I appreciate the generosity that other families give to our children during the holidays.” She added “when the children receive these gifts, I can see joy and happiness in their faces.”
In addition to providing necessities and gifts during the holiday season, YWCA Bucks County ‘s Youth Services programs offer children homework assistance and life skills training to help them build a healthy self-image and resolve conflicts peacefully throughout the year. At the core of YWCA Youth Services is the desire to advance their program participants’ concept of self and provide youth with the tools, skills, and opportunities needed to be successful in school and in life. But it’s the Holiday Hearts program that resonates with YW youth the most, as Rida, a participant in the YWCA Youth Services Program stated “the YWCA helps make kids’ wishes come true.”
