Evanston/North Shore

There are several ways for volunteers to support our organization. Whether it is for a few hours, a few days, or for the long-term, we appreciate your interest and involvement.

Direct Service

Domestic violence services volunteers work first-hand with our clients and directly impact their lives. Volunteers are required to complete a 40-hour DV training, which is available at the YWCA once a year. Link here for a description of what our DV volunteers do.

The next available 40-hour training at the YWCA will likely take place in the Spring of 2013. Please contact our Director of Domestic Violence Services if you are interested in registering. The Chicago Battered Women's Network also offers monthly training.

If you have completed training, please contact us for volunteer opportunities in our Domestic Violence Services program. For more information about training or volunteering, contact Wendy Dickson, our Director of Domestic Violence Services, at 847-864-8445, ext. 112.

Adopt-A-Room Program

Organizations, clubs, community groups and individuals can adopt and maintain shelter rooms to ensure that every women and child feels a sense of home, safety and support at Mary Lou’s Place. Read more here...

Special Skills

If you or your group have special skills, please consider donating your time and services to the YWCA. We are in need of support in the following areas:

  • Special event coordination
  • Child care
  • Administrative support
  • Legal Services for our Domestic Violence Services clients
  • Gardening and landscaping

For more information about volunteering your services, contact Trimmy Stamell at 847-864-8445.

Race Against Hate

By far, the largest demand we have for volunteers is in the spring and early summer as we get ready for the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate. Volunteers are needed for:

  • Goody bag stuffing
  • Packet pick-up support
  • Poster distribution
  • Course marshalls
  • On site registration
  • Food tent support
  • T-shirt distribution

If you are interested in volunteering for the Race in any capacity, please contact Race Director Trimmy Stamell at 847-864-8445.
