Job Training and Empowerment

The YWCA supports initiatives to increase the income of women, including policies that raise the minimum wage, protect overtime, strengthen equal pay, maintain the earned income tax credit, oppose the privatization of Social Security, and expand training for women from all socio-economic and racial backgrounds. Over 100,000 women annually are enrolled in Job Training and Empowerment Programs.

The YWCA provides job education and training to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency at no cost. Illiteracy, lack of educational achievement (high school diploma/GED) and lack of employment experience are significant barriers to gainful employment, economic security, advancement and self-sufficiency. Educational programming (literacy and job readiness training) empowers adults with the knowledge and skills to advance their educational and economic status. YWCAs all over the country are empowering women of all ages in their communities by giving them the tools and the knowledge necessary for employment. Below are some of the job training programs YWCAs have to offer.

  • YWCA Greater Los Angeles’ Job Corps Program has been helping women receive job training since 1965. They focus on a holistic career development training approach, which integrates the teaching of academic, vocational, employability skills and social competencies through a combination of classroom and practical-based learning experiences to prepare young women for stable, long-term, high-paying jobs.
  • YWCA San Gabriel Valley (Calif.) and Women at Work have partnered to provide avariety of effective resource options for women age 50+ to help secure employment and financial stability. Through the Employment Assistance Program, job seekers are introduced to modern job search and self-marketing tools. Through a peer support environment, they are motivated and encouraged to become job ready.
  • YWCA Topeka (Kan.) Career Assistance Network (C.A.N.) is a program that creates opportunities for individual growth and empowerment through self sufficiency. C.A.N. offers The Highway Construction and Life Skills Management course, which is designed
    to provide pre-employment, entry-level training and supportive services in an effort to increase the total number of women, minorities and disadvantaged persons employed in the construction industry.
