Executive Director

 

About the YWCA: The YWCA of Greater Charleston, Inc. has been serving women and children in Charleston since 1907. The YWCA’s priorities include increasing the income of Charleston-area women by expanding training for women from all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds, helping women find affordable and accessible child care, providing children with opportunities to enable them to succeed in school and in life, nurturing the health and wellness of local girls and women, and educating children and adults about the devastating impact of racism, hate crimes, and discrimination on the lives of all people.

 

Summary: The Executive Director of the YWCA of Greater Charleston is charged with the day-to-day management and continued growth of the YWCA. This is an outstanding opportunity for an entrepreneurial manager who is capable of focusing on both strategic leadership and daily operations, creating positive interaction with key community stakeholders and program recipients, and driving financial stability and growth.

 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have extensive practical experience in a fast-paced environment with proven management, business development, and organizational skills. S/he will be self-motivated and driven, and must believe that non-profit organizations can and should operate using the best business practices available. S/he will have a BA/BS in a related field and at least five years in a leadership position in either a for-profit or non-profit environment. S/he will be experienced with and excited by the promise of an entrepreneurial organization poised for continued growth, be an expert in donor stewardship and relationship development, and possess the ability to navigate both the challenges and opportunities inherent in a rapidly changing atmosphere staffed by mission-driven achievers. Finally, s/he will be a strategic thinker who sees every relationship as a source of new income to support mission-based activities, a proven track record building a cadre of referral sources, and the ability to maximize Board development to further the objectives of the organization. Specifically, the ideal candidate will have:

 

·         Excellent business development and management skills. 

·         The ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, and the common sense to know which to prioritize. 

·         The willingness and flexibility for periodic early morning and evening and weekend internal/external meetings and events as required.

·         Excellent communications skills, both oral and written. The ability to discuss complex issues and translate them into lay terms as needed.

·         High levels of integrity, trustworthiness, flexibility, and humor necessary to address the realities of a growing organization, along with the creativity, and persistence, required to develop new relationships. 

·         An ability to inject a sense of fun into the workplace, while also providing strong support and guidance to the staff.

 

Essential Duties

A.                 Fundraising
Responsible for overall fund development of organization. Work with Board of Directors to develop and implement annual fundraising plan, including major donors, grants, appeals, and special events.

B.                Human Resources/Staff Supervision
Responsible for the direct supervision of Program Director, Office Manager, and Outreach Manager. Conducts annual evaluations of above staff. Holds regularly scheduled meetings with staff. Assesses the need for additional training for staff and coordinates the implementation of any needed training. Serves as point of contact for vendors concerning health insurance, retirement, and other benefits. reviews annually all personnel policies and makes needed adjustments to ensure they are up-to-date. Ensures effective and consistent implementation of personnel policies throughout the organization.

C.                Public Relations
Positively represent the YWCA in the community. Serve as point person for all media contacts. Write press releases. Work with PR Committee to develop and implement overall media relations strategy.

D.                Budget Development & Financial Management
Work with Treasurer and bookkeeper to develop and monitor organizational budget. Monitors accounts receivables to ensure that sound financial management practices are being followed. Ensure that programs are operated in a cost-effective manner. Makes recommendation on record keeping systems. Coordinate annual audit.

E.                 Board Development
Serve as staff liaison to Board of Directors. With Board Chairperson, prepare agendas and reports for monthly Board meetings. Assist Board committees. Submit candidates for nomination to the Board. Prepare Board orientation packets and provide orientation.          

F.                 Strategic Planning
Continue the YWCA’s strategic planning to develop a three-to-five year plan related to building development/expansion, program development, and operations development.
