"I can't wait until they have TechGYRLS Summer Camp again next year! I learned a lot my friends don't know about computers!"

Imani Bah

Up until junior high school, boys and girls play on a level field when it comes to interest and ability in science and math. Then, with the onset of puberty, something happens. Boys focus more on math and science, while girls focus is shifted away from math and science toward life skills.

In a world where economic empowerment depends on technology, this puts young women at a disadvantage.

Closing the gender gap

A survey conducted by the YWCA Lake County found that girls not only feel disconnected from positions of technology, math, science and leadership but that they also see such careers as isolating and unpopular. TechGYRLS®  in Action seeks to change that thinking.

The YWCA TechGYRLS® program works to reduce the widening gender gap and increase exposure to and interest in technology for girls, ages 9-14. In an all-female setting, the YWCA Lake County's TechGYRLS® in Action program is designed to broaden girls' knowledge of and interest in math, science and technology. Girls gain confidence using technology tools in whatever profession they pursue, even if it's just doing homework!

The YWCA prides itself on being racially diverse and providing activities that create a feeling of unity and belonging. Today, girls are out of sync with major career trends, and are making critical decisions when they get to high school that could negatively affect their career options and earning potential as adults.
