Menninger Bible Study

"Four Years Through the Bible," the study course developed by Mrs. Flo V. Menninger in 1898, has been taught continuously since that time. Mrs. Menninger’s first class was in January 1898 and consisted of 28 women.

Mrs. Menninger planned the courses over several years of extensive study and research. She was searching for a systematic study of the Bible, chapter by chapter and book by book. "Four Years Through the Bible" is divided into four sections: the first year "Genesis to Kings," the second "Kings to Malachi," the third "Life of Christ," and the fourth "Acts, Epistles, Revelation."

The non-denominational course, which has been taught continuously since its beginning, is offered by volunteer teachers to students across the country in classes that run from September through April. In 2000-2001, 386 people were enrolled in 38 classes; 56 of those completed the four-year course. It has grown largely through word of mouth.

The only cost associated with the class is the $25 fee for course materials.

Mrs. Menninger constantly urged "know your Bible," and her course is designed to make the Bible its own interpreter, dealing with facts instead of opinions, finding in the Bible a rule of faith and practice for the various demands of life.

In her book "Days of My Life," published in 1939, Mrs. Menninger wrote: "My aim in this Bible class work has always been to make the Bible characters live, to make the book itself understandable and interesting to the reader. I feel that we should view the text historically, symbolically, spiritually. I am sure it offers the best possible help to those who want to find God in their daily lives."
