YWCA Healthy Youth program, is a multi-faceted program that works to
empower youth
to make healthy and responsible decisions. This goal is accomplished through several
key program components classroom education, out of school programs, summer camps,
 resource project and much more.

classroom education

During the school year, this program offers research-based comprehensive sexual health education in the local middle and high schools. This program encourages abstinence and parent teen communication about sexual and other health related issues.

Participants learn and practice skills so that they can avoid high risk situations,

develop healthy attitudes and behaviors.

Students receiving services are currently demonstrating a 58% improvement in knowledge of sexual health issues, as demonstrated by pre & post testing.  We have identified two target schools that are currently using our services and are working on implementing a long term tracking system that will allow a measurement of program effectiveness.

discoverME & ACTIVEyouth

During the summer and on days school is out of session, ywca Healthy Youth prgram offers discoverME a program for girls’ ages 9-12 focused on self-worth and empowerment.  In 2008, Camp participants demonstrated a 23% increase in their self-esteem and self-worth, as shown by pre & post testing.

ACTIVEyouth is a new ywca Healthy Youth prgram for boys ages 9-15 focused on healthy eating, activity and a healthy lifestyle.

resource project

Our program works with HEAR youth coalition a group of local youth serving agencies including PARS, FSGC and many more.  The goal of this coalition is to help youth become healthy, empowered and responsible.  HEAR youth sponsors a resource project at the high school level, bringing together agencies who serve youth with students needing information and services.

website outreach

The program works with students in the classroom, the community and on the web.  We have an Ask Amy site on our YWCA webpage, an active facebook, myspace and twitter account where we have over 200 “friends”.  All of these sites are actively maintained and students visiting these sites receive accurate information and links to services.
