in 1900
59 women gathered together to discuss establishing a YWCA in Hawaii. These women wanted to create a place where women could learn through unique experiences and girls could grow through exposure to positive role models.
The Honolulu YWCA, as it was known in the early years, offered classes such as sewing, lace-making and Chinese cooking. The YWCA also provided support and guidance to female immigrants--women coming to the islands seeking a better life. Over the years, the organization grew to offer job training, transitional housing, arts and enrichment classes, youth leagues and community meeting services.
today
we are the oldest and largest women's organization in Hawaii. Our programs help women achieve their fullest potential as professionals, as mothers and as leaders in their communities.
