Youth Camps

Youth Camp

Let your child enjoy all that Camp Westwind has to offer.  Campers of a similar age join with a cabin group of seven old and new friends, for a fun-filled, action-packed session. Activities may include cookouts, arts and crafts, beach games, overnights, tide pooling, challenge course, nature hikes, kayaking, archery, stargazing, campfires or ocean dipping.  There is such a variety of things to do that no group can do them all in one session!  Many campers come time and time again to try new things, and experience all the fun, friendships, challenges and adventure Westwind can offer.  Youth Camps vary in length from six to eight days.

First Timer Camp

Is a whole week too long for your child to be away from home?  Has he or she never been to camp before? Busy summer schedule? Try our three-night camp. This session is specially designed for first time campers, and also for those campers for whom a six-day session is just a little too long. This session will include fun on the beach, campfires, camp crafts, digging for ghost shrimp, exploring the tide pools and much more. But don’t forget, camp isn’t complete without S’MORES! Due to the short session trail rides are not avaliable for First Timers.

Entering grades 1 to 4

  • June 28 to July 1 ($305)

Marine Discovery

YWCA Camp Westwind is proud to partner with OMSI to bring to you as a
truly unique adventure. Together with OMSI Naturalist and our Camp Westwind staff we will investigate the sandy beaches and rocky intertidal areas where crabs, anemones, and nudibranches hide from the breaking waves.

Explore the sandy beaches and coastal forests and freshwater lakes at Camp Westwind, and the active estuary of the coastal Salmon River. We will spend an overnight in the Salmon River estuary and then take a trip with Marine Discovery tours to investigate the fascinating creatures
that inhabit the Yaquina bay estuary.

This program will focus on the
birds, mammals, fish, and invertebrates that inhabit ocean, beach and estuarine ecosystems and the amazing dynamic nature of the Oregon coastal region.

Entering grades 4 to 7

  • Will not be offered in 2009

Ranch Camps

Ranch Camps - Girls Only

For those who love horses, this is an experience of a lifetime!  Campers train with the same horse daily, learning how to work and ride their horse. Ranch campers live in platform tents just a short walk away from main camp as well as the stables! When not working with the horses, campers will join in the regular camp activities.

Sea Horses
The Sea Horse Program is designed for the novice or beginning rider. These are campers that may never have been on a horse before, or have only taken a few rides or lessons. The goal of this program is to develop a sense of comfort for working around and riding horses. There are no skill prerequisites for this program, and campers will graduate with experience in the following areas:

  • Basic ground safety and handling skills
  • Mounting and dismounting safely
  • Correct body position and riding posture
  • Neck reining and direct reining
  • Control at a walk on trails, in arena and over obstacles
  • Halting, turning, standing and moving out

Beach Broncs
Beach Broncs is designed for riders with intermediate skills. These campers have either graduated successfully from the Sea Horses or can verify equal experiences. Campers that have not completed Sea Horses will be asked to demonstrate their riding skills on the first day of camp. Acceptable examples of equal experiences include riding 8-12 times per year or taking regular riding lessons with a certified instructor.  Campers will graduate with experience in the following areas:

  • Handling, grooming and saddling horses
  • Backing up/reversing
  • Cueing correctly for jog and trot
  • Maintaining correct body position and posture at jog and trot
  • Maintaining control of horse at jog and trot in arena, on trails and over obstacles

River Riders

River Riders is designed for riders with advanced skills. These campers have either graduated Beach Broncs or can verify equal experiences. Please note that this program is designed to challenge competent riders, and skill level is extremely important. Campers that have not completed the Beach Broncs program will be asked to demonstrate their skills on the first day of camp. Acceptable examples of equal experiences include riding/showing frequently and regularly throughout the year, taking regular lessons with a certified instructor and owning or leasing a horse.  River Riders  will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Independently catching a horse in pasture, grooming, saddling, bridling, mounting and dismounting
  • Cueing correctly for lope and canter
  • Maintaining correct body position and posture at lope and canter
  • Maintaining control of horse at lope and canter in arena, on trails and over obstacles
  • Walking, trotting and cantering bareback

Campers interested in the River Riders program should be willing to be actively challenged and eager to work hard to improve their horsemanship skills. This includes taking on responsibilities not presented to Sea Horses or Beach Broncs, being paired with more challenging horses and taking an active role in their training.

When not riding, all Ranch campers will take part in hands-on ground lessons that include the following topics:

  • Ground Safety and Handling
  • Grooming
  • Saddling and Bridling
  • Equine First Aid
  • Equine Herd Behavior
  • Energy Work and Aromatherapy

If a camper chooses not to go on the trail ride once at camp, a refund is not available. Ranch Campers do not need to register for trail rides.
