In January of 1998, President William Jefferson Clinton nominated Judge Wardlaw to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She began her service on the Court of Appeals on August 3, 1998.
Most recently in September of 2009, Judge Wardlaw was honored with the Ernestine Stahlhut Award from the Women’s Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. The Stahlhut award recognizes a woman judge or lawyer who has demonstrated outstanding character and dedication, made significant contributions to the cause of justice, challenged other women to excel in the legal field, and encouraged young women to enter the profession. It is also widely accepted that Judge Wardlaw was one of President Obama's considerations for the Supreme Court nomination in 2009.
Come and share the morning with us as we hear from Judge Wardlaw about her dedication to empowering women in law and her personal and unique experience that led her to become the first Latina woman to be appointed to the United States Court of Appeals.

Happy New Year!
Begin 2010 by adopting one of the following actions
as a personal resolution.
Ten Things You Can Do to Eliminate Racism:
1. Do not let racist remarks go unchallenged even if they are uttered or made by a friend, relative or total stranger. Point out that their remark/action is racist and ask them to stop.
2. Confront those telling racial jokes or using negative stereotypes about the insensitivity and inappropriateness of such remarks.
3. Refuse to tolerate racism is any setting (business, social, etc.); speak up against racist comments or actions.
4. Become more conscious of privilege/racism where it exists in you and others.
5. Participate in local events, cultural or museum presentations outside of your comfort zone. (Latino Heritage and Black History parade, Pacific Asia Museum)
6. Look people in the eye when you speak to them with sensitivity to cultural norms.
7. Take note of individuals applying for positions, or who are currently employed, who have credentials from other countries. Are they being considered and compensated in the same way that those who are American born and educated?
8. Select diverse vendors for your personal or business purchases.
9. Have your child invite a student of a different background over for a play date and/or invite an associate of a different background over for dinner.
10. Acknowledge that racism still exists.
However small you may think your actions are, you are still contributing to world peace and ripples of your smallest efforts will be far-reaching!
Just for Girls Holiday Party
On Thursday, December 17, the YWCA celebrated the Holidays with our most treasured blessing, our Just for Girls' participants.
|

John Muir girls enjoy their food in front of the Christmas Tree.
|

Blair student shows off 2010 JFG calendar, a complimentary gift for each girl provided by Castle Press!
|
50 Just for Girls (JFG) participants from 7 different PUSD schools including Blair, Muir and Washington came to the YWCA for a time to play games, eat, receive gifts and decorate a personal picture frame to give to someone special in their life.
A multitude of community members, organizations and businesses pulled together and donated over $2,000 of in-kind services and gifts for these young ladies. A tremendous THANK YOU to all who were a part of making this holiday party such a success.
Most of all, we at the YWCA are so thankful for these young ladies and the commitment they have shown to become empowered, educated and responsible women.
