English as a Second Language
Adult ESL classes meet a continuing need in our community to help residents improve their English communication skills and function more effectively in the United States. Curriculum integrates conversational skills, basic computer skills, civic participation and job readiness skills, and now also financial literacy skills. The program is funded through the Illinois Community College Board, and this year also includes funding provided under the Community Services Block Grant American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Program. ABE classes (Adult Basic Education in partnership with U-46 Adult Ed. Program.) are also offered at the YWCA Elgin, in English.

Offsite Programs
The YWCA Elgin provides ESL classes for parents of children in the U-46 school district and interested local residents. Currently adult ESL classes are offered at Laurel Hill Elementary (Hanover Park), Garfield Elementary (Elgin), Oakhill Elementary (Streamwood), and at Headstart (on Dundee Ave., Elgin). The full classes and waiting lists confirm that these offsite programs are needed and valued in the community.
