Employment & Literacy Services
The YWCA Employment & Literacy Services Program provides education and training to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency educationally and economically at no cost. Illiteracy, lack of educational achievement (high school diploma/GED) and lack of employment experience are significant barriers to gainful employment, economic security and advancement, and self-sufficiency. Educational programming (literacy and job readiness training) empowers adults with the knowledge and skills to advance their educational and economic status.
|
The YWCA also provides comprehensive educational services to English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL.) English language skills are essential if immigrants are to successfully assimilate into our culture and community. The ability to communicate effectively also has a significant impact on their economic viability and ability to achieve self-sufficiency.
The YWCA's Literacy Program offers comprehensive services for those looking for assistance with improving their literacy skills, earning their GED, and advancing English Language skills.
-
Classes are offered from 9 to 12 am, Monday through Friday mornings.
-
Evening classes for ESOL students are also offered every Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm.
-
All classes are offered at the YWCA downtown site, located at 898 Walnut Street (9th & Walnut) across from the public library.
Class schedules are structured so that students receive optimal personalized instruction. Students are assigned to classes according to their skill in each subject matter. By tailoring each student's schedule to meet their educational needs, the effectiveness of the instruction is maximized. Additionally one-on-one tutoring is available for those in need of extra assistance or has not achieved a literacy level sufficient to benefit from larger group instruction.
|

|
ESOL classes are offered on a variety of topics, including phonics and spelling, language, and government and civics. Students are placed in the appropriate classes according to their skill level. Many of the ESOL students transition into our GED classes and often go on to pursue a secondary education.
