Home > October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

During October, the YWCA will hold the following events,
open to the public to honor and remember domestic violence victims.

October 2, 10 am: Proclamation by First Selectman at Town Hall

October 4: World Day of Play

"A Safe Place" Art opening  October 3 - 29
The Gertrude G. White Gallery will feature works by domestic violence victims and students who volunteer to help victims.

Silent Witness Exhibit  October 3 - 9
The Silent Witness Project is a traveling exhibit of life-size red wooden silhouettes, each representing a Connecticut woman or child who was killed by a husband, partner or acquaintance. Because these people no longer have a voice, the silhouettes are called the Silent Witnesses. Each figure bears the name and brief story of a woman or child who once lived among us. See it in the main lobby.

Silent Vigil     October 16
The community is invited to attend a Candlelight Vigil to raise awareness of domestic violence at 6 pm in the YWCA Gertrude G. White Gallery.  At the vigil, we will remember victims of domestic violence, support victims who suffer, celebrate those who survive, explain how domestic abuse affects our lives and present our annual Purple Ribbon Award to an individual for outstanding commitment to victims of domestic violence. The presentation will feature a survivor who will tell her story, music and singing by the Grace Notes, and the reading of the names of the victims who died in Connecticut this past year.

October 21: Performance by Dale Allen – In Our Right Minds, her website is: www.inourrightminds.com
