Women open purse to benefit the women, girls and families of the YWCA!
Through the generosity and caring support of community members, the YWCA raised over $50,000 at the Third Annual Purse & Passion Luncheon held November 12th at UNCW’s Burney Center. Over 250 community members filled the room to hear inspiring stories and see the role the YWCA plays in helping women and their families face tough challenges.
YWCA program participants shared their stories in a short video produced by Danielle Collazo of Designer Media Productions. "Girls Circle has taught me many basic skills such as courage, bravery, care, and sympathy and has given me self esteem," said Gabby, a past YWise Kids participant, Girls Circle participant and presently a Junior Counselor, "if I wasn't at the YWCA after school, I would be sitting at home."
"It is so exciting to have a place that is reasonably priced to bring Abbey to dance with a group of kids," remarked Becky, mom of a Therapeutic Dance participant, "our dance class not only benefits Abbey's cognitive and social skills, but gives us the opportunity to keep her body moving, which is so important with Rhett's Syndrome."
Nan Graham, a water aerobics participant, was the featured speaker and shared her story. Ms. Graham has two artificial knees and joined the pool after her doctor recommended it.
Executive Director Lois Cook Steele stated that this event is a testimony to the power that women have in their hearts, minds and purses. “The women and families in our programs will benefit greatly from those who gave so graciously. We are overwhelmed with their generosity,” said YWCA Executive Director Lois Cook Steele. “I am thankful to the community members who are dedicated and compassionate about the YWCA.”
