The purpose of the YWCA Early Head Start program is to enhance the educational status and economic outcomes of primarily adolescent parents and their children. This purpose is accomplished by providing early, continuous, and comprehensive child development services, parenting training, family support and assistance, and health services to effect positive long-term outcomes for children and families. Collaborative Partnerships to Promote Early Literacy

Little Bookshelf Project

In 2007, the Early Head Start (EHS) program began a partnership with Dr. Becky White of the LSU AgCenter to enroll EHS infants and toddlers into Dr. White's Little Bookshelf Project, which provides families with a new age-appropriate children's book each month for one year. This collaboration was expanded during 2008 to include EBRP Library and a $2000 mini-grant from Children's Coalition of Greater Baton Rouge. Through these community partnerships seeds of early literacy are planted, the importance of reading to a child's development is shared, and utilization of the public library's vast resources is emphasized. For more information on the Little Bookshelf Project, please contact Doug Leyda at 225-338-0028.
