In Milwaukee, according to the Department of Health and Human Services:
- 2,000 people are homeless every night
- 62,000 children are living in poverty
- 145,000 people receive food stamps
The Transitional Housing Program (THP) provides temporary housing and supportive services to women and their children experiencing homelessness throughout Milwaukee County. This program is designed to break the cycle of homelessness by addressing interpersonal skill-building, work-related education, parental skills, drug abuse prevention, domestic violence counseling and other related issues. THP assists low-income, single-parent families with an average of two children. The program, which serves an average of 35 families annually, offers services to those in need for up to two years.
Due to the rising costs of housing, utilities and maintenance, THP is in need of community support. The YWCA has launched a campaign to partner with local congregations, FAITH, which stands for Families Assisted in Transitional Housing. These groups are encouraged to adopt THP units and provide financial assistance, as well as other essentials such as furniture, paint, bedding and household items. This assistance will ensure the continuation of this vital service to the community.
