The Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, held on Sunday, June 21st, was a huge success! Over 3,700 participants in the 5K walk, 5K run, 10K run and youth mile came together to race against hate, celebrate diversity and promote racial harmony in Evanston against the backdrop of a beautiful, sunny day. We thank all who made Race Day so positive, from the participants who created an enthusiastic ribbon of blue race shirts along Sheridan Road to the 320 volunteers who registered them, passed out t-shirts, handed out cups of water and served as course marshals. about the race
Now in its eleventh year, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate was started by Ricky's wife, Sherialyn, and his friends in memory of the former basketball coach at Northwestern University. Ricky was out walking in his Skokie neighborhood with two of his young children on a beautiful day in July of 1999 when he was killed by Benjamin Nathanial Smith, a member of the white supremacist Creativity Movement. Within the next several days, Smith also killed a Korean American college student and wounded six Orthodox Jewish men, three other black men and a Taiwanese immigrant.
Because of Ricky’s lifelong love of sports and his compelling work with young people in the community, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate was launched to honor his legacy and bring attention to the need to combat hatred in all its forms. In 2007, Sherialyn Byrdsong entrusted the Race to the YWCA Evanston/North Shore to steward into the future (read Sherialyn Byrdsong's story here). Today, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate annually draws thousands of participants from throughout Chicagoland to join together to declare that racism is not tolerated. Proceeds benefit the work of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore, especially in areas of violence prevention and racial equity.
