The YWCA of Genesee County was established in 1910. 

The YWCA of the USA was founded in 1906 by more than 100 local associations already in business addressing the needs of young women arriving to work in America's industrial cities.

The newly formed national organization for the YWCA facilitated the exchange of information on issues and programs, policy decisions and experiences relating to strengthening the YWCA as a whole.

The resources, services and structure developed in 1906 greatly enhanced the visibility and impact local YWCAs were having on American women and girls.

We are all part of the organization that from the beginning not only offered programs to empower women and girls but also worked actively and effectively toward overall social change. 

Back then, YWCAs at the local level:
-worked to improved unsanitary conditions in factories and to abolish child labor
-provided safe housing (first boarding house for young women), and child care (first day nursery)
-began the tradition of hearing from women who could  easily speak on their own behalf

To create a YWCA for the 21st century, local associations have accepted a challenge to create a larger pool of opportunities for women's growth, leadership and action.

The YWCA of Genesee County advances the mission of the YWCA by providing services to women and girls, including YWCA Hallmark programs (economic empowerment and racial justice) and by undertaking advocacy efforts to eliminate violence in our society and to raise awareness of critical information on improving women's health.
