Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill on October 21st that temporarily restores 70% of the domestic violence shelter funding he eliminated by line-item veto in July. The bill borrows $16.3 million from the Alternative Fuel and Vehicle Technology Fund to support California’s struggling shelters, six of which have been forced to close since funds were cut. The YWCA Sonoma County was forced to cut $200,000 from its budget in July.
Signing the emergency bill was a step in the right direction, but the work to secure ongoing funding for shelters has just begun. We hope this is a step toward renewing the State's long-term support for victims of domestic violence and their children. This is not simply a social problem, it’s a public safety issue.
