 2009 YWCA Week Without Violence Schedule of Events

Monday, October 19 Addressing Violence Worldwide	Film Screening of "My Neighbor, My Killer"   7:00 p.m. Salt Lake City Public Library Auditorium (210 East 400 South)   The Salt Lake City Film Center and the YWCA have partnered together to screen this film set in Rwanda. The focus of the film is on the Gacaca Tribunals—open-air hearings with citizen-judges meant to try their neighbors and rebuild the nation of Rwanda after the devastating effects of the 1994 genocide. As part of this experiment in reconciliation, confessed genocide killers are sent home from prison, while traumatized survivors are asked to forgive them and resume living side-by-side. Please join us, the Salt Lake City Film Center and the award-winning filmmaker Anne Aghion to view and discuss this film.
Tuesday, October 20 Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness	"Brown Bag” Discussion of Teen Dating Violence   5:30 p.m. Mestizo Coffeehouse (641 West North Temple, Suite 700)   The YWCA and the Family Justice Center have partnered together for this event where a survivor of teen dating violence will speak and information will be given to help teens and parents better understand the warning signs and where to go for help.
Wednesday, October 21 Community Partnerships to Prevent Violence Against Women	YWCA Public Official of the Year Appreciation Breakfast   7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Remarks at 7:45 a.m. YWCA of Salt Lake City (322 East 300 South)   Representative Lorie D. Fowlke will be honored for her dedicated efforts to strengthen the safety, health, and well-being of Utah women and their families.
Thursday, October 22 Keeping Families Safe	Community Carnival   5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Magic Show at 7:00 p.m. YWCA (322 East 300 South)   A fun night of activities and free pizza for family members of all ages. Information will also be provided on ways for families to stay safe and have fun.
Friday, October 23 Gun Violence Prevention and Awareness	Daffodil Planting   11:00 a.m. Unity Center (1385 South 900 West, Glendale)   A public official will speak at the annual Daffodil Day event, sponsored by The Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah. Join us to hear him speak, and then help plant daffodils in remembrance of those who died as a result of gun violence in Utah last year.
