PVFF -- Violence Prevention Collaboration -- Moves to YWCA
www.pvff.org
The Partnership for Violence Free Families (PVFF) moved its offices from LACCA to the YWCA as of June 1, 2009. PVFF was established in 2001 by a grant from the Anthem Foundation and is a collaborative group of over 50 individuals representing 35 agencies working together towards its mission: "Through partnership, we will create a community that will not tolerate violence." Donna Dickman, Director of PVFF, said it addresses all forms of family violence including child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse through awareness campaigns and prevention training and programming. Donna served on the initial task force as representative of the Girl Scouts of Appleseed Ridge in 2001. As the project began the implementation stage in year three, Donna applied for the project director’s position and has since coordinated the efforts of the Partnership. She has obtained certification as an ACT Community Coordinator, an Olweus Bullying Prevention Trainer, a Safe Dates Facilitator, and a Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Facilitator. She looks forward to serving the community for years to come through these important prevention initiatives.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program

While the Program is abstinence based, it also addresses a broad spectrum of issues not presented in other school-based/
abstinence based curriculum such as Pregnancy Prevention Practices, STD’s, Teen Dating Abuse, Self-esteem, Decision Making, Goal Setting, Peer Pressure, Friendship & Dating, Safe Dates, Social Skills Workshop, Depression and Suicide and Baby Think it Over Dolls. In 2008, 2,689 youth were served by the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program of the YWCA.

The fourteen advanced Baby Think it Over Dolls in different ethnic groups in both male and female genders that were purchased in 2006 and 2008 have been actively used in Allen County Schools. These dolls require feeding, burping, rocking, and diaper changing on a 24-hour schedule. It offers experiential learning by providing students with experiences that help them make informed decisions about parenting. The Baby Think It Over Dolls have been very well received in the Allen County Schools and are spoken for every weekend until the end of the 2008-2009 school year. The RealCare Parenting Program is linked to several national and state family consumer sciences and health teaching standards. New in 2008-2009 was the Shaken Baby Simulator Doll and curriculum. In addition to the BTIO Dolls, the Educator is requesting the purchase of the Drug Infected and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Dolls this year, as well as the pregnancy profile vest and curriculum for same.

Curriculum is available to support the following topics: Abstinence, Pregnancy Prevention, STD and HIV Prevention, Teens Sex and the Law, Friendship and Dating, Safe Dates (violence in teen relationships), Athletes Alcohol and Steroids, Social Skills Workshop, Personality and Career Search, Danger of Methamphetamine and other Street Drugs, Dangers of Chewing and Dipping Tobacco, Depression and Suicide, Youth and Guns, Teen Bulimia and Anorexia, and Cutting (understanding self-injury).
