Still GROWing
Green Opportunities & Resources for Women
Fifty-five women attended YWomenCAN's second green careers for women workshop on Tuesday, November 3. They heard presentations on a variety of green collar jobs and opportunities for training in these fields. Dorothy Witherspoon, director of Region 7 of the Department of Labor's Women's Bureau gave an overview of the green job industry and the impact it will have on the economy. Marlene Nagle of Mid-America Regional Council spoke about jobs in the up and coming fields of green infrastructure and energy conservation. Warren Adams-Leavitt from OAI, Inc discussed training and jobs in the mold, asbestos and lead abatement/remediation fields. Shery Greene from the Energy Training Center of Kansas City presented information on the hot fields of weatherization and energy auditing as well as the training available at her center in Kansas City, Kansas. Cris Siebenlist, Program Director for YWomenCAN, announced a new program funded by the Women's Bureau to recruit and provide intensive support for women to be trained in green jobs. In addition participants were able to visit with representatives from funding and other support agencies and training institutions including: Kansas City Kansas Community College, Full Employment Council, Workforce Partnership, Goodwill Job Hunters Program, OSHA, The Women's Bureau, Energy Training Center of Kansas City, OAI, Inc, Mid-America Regional Council and YWomenCAN.
One women said that attending the workshop has given her the first ray of hope she has felt after a very long time of being unemployed. Almost half of the attendees signed up to learn more about the training opportunities and the YWomenCAN support program.
