YWCA of Greensboro
(Over 100 Years of Serving the Greater Greensboro Community)

1903 Community women opened a rest and reading room in the Southern Life & Trust Company Building.  The YWCA had arrived in Greensboro.
1918 Driven by World War I labor shortages, college students formed a group known as The Carpenterettes. Wishing for a place to meet career women, The Carpenterettes constructed a frame building on the campus of Woman's College. This became the site of the city's first Student YWCA.
1922 Volunteers from the Greensboro YWCA District Nurse and Relief Committee fought a devastating flu epidemic. This committee fostered the creation of the Guilford County Health Department.
1936 At a meeting of presidents and secretaries of North Carolina YWCAs, which was held in Greensboro, attendees discussed the following problems: international relations, minority groups, problems of youth, freedom of speech, dissemination of birth control information, motion pictures, and liquor control.
1960s YWCA "contributed to openness, common sense and acceptance to the demonstrations for civil rights. The Association was proud of having tried for twenty years to prepare the community for change without violence."
1971 Current facility opened, successfully joining membership from both White and Black branches.
1991 YWCA joined with other groups to form Life Savers, a statewide coalition of NC organizations committed to reducing breast and cervical cancer mortality by providing access to screening mammograms and Pap smears. This group successfully lobbied for passage of legislation requiring health insurers to provide coverage for testing.
2003 YWCA of Greensboro celebrated its 100th anniversary with a lavish gala, the creation of a commemorative poster, and a series of community breakfasts.  The 100th Anniversary Committee selected six people, who have made significant contributions throughout their association with the organization, to honor as "YWCA Living Legends".
2004 YWCA introduces the new brand as well as the new emphasis on the mission statement at the Unveiling Breakfast.
