Since 1909, the YWCA Madison has been dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing, and employment and training programs for women. As the decades have unfolded the programs have changed, and the addresses have changed, but the mission to serve women and girls has endured. Our mission has been strengthened in recent years by our recommitment to racial equality. In 2002, the YWCA USA and the YWCA Madison embraced a bold brand and a strong message: we stand for the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women.
NEED STATEMENT
Today, the YWCA Madison must make a significant investment in its future. For 100 years, Madison has counted on the YWCA to serve the vulnerable populations in our midst. Here, homeless families, low-income single mothers and low-income women ages 18 to 85, some who have been homeless, some who suffer from mental illness, some who are elderly, and some at-risk adolescent and teenage girls find help and hope.
The Madison community’s need for YWCA residences and programs has increased. We are up to the challenge and confident of the community’s support for our renovation and program expansion campaign.
The Real Lives, Real Change capital campaign will enable the YWCA to continue to deliver the critical services upon which our community depends.
Through two world wars, the civil rights movement, the women’s movement and more, the YWCA Madison has been true to its mission of empowering women and eliminating racism. Across the decades, the YWCA led the way on many issues from fighting for fair housing and fair wages to advocacy for racial justice and child labor laws. Today, we are a leader in the community in employment and training opportunities for women and minorities, providing safe and secure housing and ground breaking racial justice work.
