Salute to Women of Achievement

For almost 30 years, the YWCA has been recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of women in our community  and recognizing women in the following areas:

Phyllis Wheatley Award:  (Click here for application)

Awarded to a woman who has worked successfully toward eliminating racism within the Indianapolis community, exhibits outstanding service and leadership in bringing about understanding and cooperation among all races, serves as an excellent role model for women of all ages, and reflects and supports the mission of the YWCA.

Phyllis (Phillis) Wheatley (1753 – December 5, 1784) was the first published African-American poet and first African-American woman whose writings helped create the genre of African American literature.  Born in Gambia, she was made a slave at age 7. Wheatley’s popularity as a poet both in the United States and England ultimately gained her freedom on October 18, 1773. She was a strong supporter of American independence, reflected in both poems and plays she wrote during the Revolutionary War.

Awarded to a young woman who has made outstanding contributions to the Indianapolis community through her role as a volunteer and/or work, demonstrates outstanding service and leadership, serves as an excellent role model for young adults, and reflects and supports the mission of the YWCA.

Awarded to a woman who has made outstanding contributions and/or achievements within her career that impacts the Indianapolis community, exhibits outstanding leadership in her endeavors, serves as an excellent role model for women of all ages, and reflects and supports the mission of the YWCA.
