Women and girls of color routinely experience racial profiling in traffic stops, airport security screening, border and immigration enforcement, schools, and other interactions with government institutions and law enforcement. They also experience profiling, criminalization and police violence in their own homes, in private settings such as hospitals and social services, in front of children, and when in need of help from domestic violence and other threats to their safety. These experiences at the intersection of race, gender and violence are too often unexplored by current policy narratives around both mass incarceration and violence against women, yet have profound implications for the health and safety of women and girls of color. Hosted during YWCA’s signature Stand Against Racism campaign, this legislative briefing will explore legislative and policy solutions to decrease racial profiling and criminalization of girls and women of color, and the role of civic engagement in addressing this issue.
